The Last Poppy

         THE LAST POPPY

It was the last poppy he ever wore
She still keeps it in a special drawer
Along with medals and decoration
Worn not just in defence of a nation
But so liberty could again flourish
Thanks to such strength and courage
That's why the final bugle he heard
Meant more than any spoken words
It was the last poppy he ever wore
On the closing Armistice Day he saw
She pins it on alongside her own
Like the seeds of love have been sewn
Across the towns and countryside
Two minutes of silence is set aside
On the 11th day of November
Sacrifice honoured and remembered
It was the last poppy he ever wore
And symbol of so much more
Than just a simple flower
But of a triumph of willpower
Belief that would not be denied
Lives on forever with such pride
For a spirit that could never depart
The last poppy is next to her heart
